Release 1

This version first released with CUA Creative Arts and Culture Training Package Version 5.0.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to construct props that include the use of mechanical devices, such as cables, levers and fulcrums.

The unit applies to those who work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that mechanical props meet the creative requirements of productions. They may be responsible for supervising others.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Visual Communication – Props

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Determine requirements for mechanical props

1.1 Confirm requirements for mechanical props with required personnel

1.2 Discuss project constraints with required personnel that may impact on props required

1.3 Reach agreement on scope of own work and construction deadlines

1.4 Create construction plans that display outcomes of project discussions

2. Prepare for construction work

2.1 Analyse how prop items are to be used and select the most appropriate construction techniques based on prop use

2.2 Select tools, equipment and materials for mechanical props

2.3 Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible

3. Undertake construction work

3.1 Create mechanical props by following construction plans

3.2 Confirm safety procedures are always followed throughout the construction phase

3.3 Check items produced in terms of durability, quality of finish, and suitability for production requirements

4. Complete construction work

4.1 Seek feedback on work from required personnel and adjust techniques where required

4.2 Prepare items in readiness for finishing, according to production requirements

4.3 Improve own work performance through evaluation of the construction process

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

S KILL

DESCRIPTION

Learning

  • Improves own performance through seeking and comprehending the views of others

Reading

  • Interprets production documentation in relation to own duties

Writing

  • Updates workplace documentation

Oral communication

  • Obtains information by listening and questioning and uses clear language when expressing views

Numeracy

  • Performs simple calculations when taking measurements and when checking that expenditure on props meets budget allocations

Self-management

  • Takes responsibility for decisions about when and how to complete tasks
  • Takes responsibility for meeting health and safety requirements in constructing mechanical props within scope of own role

Teamwork

  • Makes mechanical props through collaboration with a range of personnel

Planning and organising

  • Adopts a methodical and logical approach to the process of constructing mechanical props
  • Plans and organises own workload according to project timelines

Unit Mapping Information

Release 1

This version first released with CUA Creative Arts and Culture Training Package Version 5.0.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • construct prop items that incorporate the use of mechanical devices for at least two different productions or events.

In the course above, the candidate must:

  • develop a construction plan that includes timelines
  • select appropriate techniques, equipment and materials for the required prop
  • follow safety procedures throughout construction
  • work collaboratively with others throughout the planning and construction processes.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • types of mechanical props and ways which they can be used in productions and events:
  • cable-controlled
  • electrically-controlled
  • mechanically-controlled
  • pneumatically-controlled
  • issues and challenges that typically arise when constructing mechanical props and strategies to address them
  • mechanical props that are usually constructed and those more likely to be acquired by other means
  • mechanical principles behind the following devices commonly used to construct mechanical props:
  • cables
  • fulcrums
  • levers
  • procedures for using common mechanical devices to create different effects on stage
  • safety requirements associated with materials, tools and equipment used to construct mechanical props.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • equipment, tools and materials used to construct mechanical props
  • a work area where mechanical props can be constructed safely.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
